The difference between impact and reach is that reach indicates how many people are touched by an initiative, while impact shows the real changes that occur in their lives as a result of that intervention. Although both concepts are important, understanding and differentiating them is crucial to design, implement and evaluate effective social projects.

What is impact?

Impact measures the profound and sustainable change that occurs in people's lives thanks to the intervention. Answers the question: what do we improve?

For example, an awareness campaign about the importance of drinking water aimed at 50,000 people can lead to 10,0000 of them starting to use water filters or taking concrete steps to improve the quality of water in their homes. That would be the impact of the program.

The impact focuses on transformation: in people's behaviors, knowledge, living conditions or even their environment.

What is scope?

Reach refers to the number of people, communities, organizations or entities that interact with the activities of an intervention. Answers the question: How many people do we reach?

In the same awareness campaign about the importance of drinking water, the reach was 50,000 people because that is the number of people who participated. However, this data alone does not indicate whether those 50,000 people really changed their habits or took measures to improve access to clean water.

Scope is useful for measuring the extent of an intervention, but it does not guarantee that significant transformations have occurred.

Although different, both concepts can complement each other to maximize the effects of a project. Reach is the foundation for impact to occur: if we don't reach enough people, we are unlikely to generate meaningful change.

However, prioritizing just reach can be a mistake. A program that reaches thousands of people but produces no tangible change is not fulfilling its ultimate purpose. The key is to find a little of both: reach many people and, at the same time, generate significant transformations in their lives.

Of course, in the scope of social impact, impact must always be the main objective. Outreach is a tool to achieve change, but the true success of an initiative is measured by its ability to transform lives. In a way, reach measures quantity, while impact measures quality.
